If you’ve been experiencing itching, burning, tingling, pain, or restless leg syndrome, your pain may be caused or exacerbated by varicose veins. These veins are large and dilated veins that are no longer properly transporting blood; instead, the blood starts pooling in the vein. As a result, the vein becomes thicker and visible above the skin, leaving many individuals feeling self-conscious.
Varicose veins are extremely common on the legs. While pain from varicose veins can be temporarily relieved with walking, it’s important to treat this pain as soon as possible. When left untreated, varicose veins can lead to blood clots and chronic ankle swelling.
Fortunately, varicose veins can be treated without requiring surgery or extensive downtime. At Surgical Arts of Virginia & Ageless Innovations Medical Spa, board certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Shane Palmer uses a variety of treatments to help treat varicose veins and eliminate leg pain. These treatments include:
- Endovenous Laser Treatment: This procedure uses both laser and ultrasound energy to damage varicose veins, which will prompt the veins to seal shut. Eventually, the vein will become destroyed and reabsorbed by the body over time. This treatment is performed in the office and under local anesthesia, with no downtime.
- Sclerotherapy: These injections are best for spider veins, but can also be used to treat smaller varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting saline solution into the vein, which irritates the vein and prompts it to close.
- Ambulatory Phlebectomy: This procedure – performed under local anesthesia – involves making small incisions around the varicose vein and manually removing them from the leg. Scars are minimal and can be faded with additional treatments; your health insurance may cover the cost of your procedure.
