We don’t often think of men when we think breast surgery, but there are many men who could benefit from surgical attention to the breast area. There are really three types of change that cause men to seek this therapy:
- Gynecomastia. This is a condition in which the breast tissue itself is enlarged to the point that it appears there is a breast bud present (which there in fact is!) and it makes for some awkward moments when the shirt is removed. This is often present in young men related to puberty, however it is also seen in older mean for a variety of reasons. The treatment is quite straight forward and if done correctly should result in a scarless improvement. I essentially remove the enlarged breast tissue immediately below the nipple. In older men, certain medical conditions should be ruled out first.
- Lipodystrophy. This is simply too much fat. This is addressed with liposuction.
- Ptosis. This is a condition in which the skin and accompanying nipple have become so lax that they descend below a normal position. They are often associated with the lipodystrophy I mention above. The treatment is a surgical lift with or without liposuction.
