Losing a substantial amount of weight is a noteworthy accomplishment, one that you should be able to enjoy! Unfortunately, massive weight loss usually leaves loose skin behind that ruins the sleek new shape you have worked so hard to achieve. However, there is a surgical solution to get rid of the excess skin in the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, lower back, and outer thighs. A lower body lift can provide you the final steps needed to achieve the body you desire.
What is a Lower Body Lift?
A lower body lift is a surgical procedure that sculpts the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, lower back, and outer thighs to correct loose or sagging skin after significant weight loss, dramatically improving the contours of your body.
A body lift will get rid of sagging skin in the following areas:
- Abdominal area
- Mons pubis (area above the genitals)
- Outer Thigh
- Anterior Thigh
- Posterior Thigh, to a lesser extent
*Benefits of a Lower Body Lift
During lower body lift surgery, skin and supporting tissues are lifted and tightened. Benefits of this amazing procedure include:
- Ability to wear more appealing and form-fitting clothing
- Ability to confidently wear two piece swimwear
- Ability to more confidently present oneself nude
- Making daily activities easier and more enjoyable
- Improved self-esteem and confidence
- Improved quality of life
Is a Lower Body Lift Right for Me?
A lower body lift is a good option if:
- You have had a large weight loss, either through bariatric surgery or through dieting
- You have sagging skin circumferentially
- Your buttocks have fallen and are misshapen
- You can accept a scar low on the abdomen, extending around the low back
*How is a Lower Body Lift Performed?
Dr. Palmer performs lower body lift in his office surgical suite under IV sedation with tumescent local anesthetic. The front is addressed first by removing any excess fat pockets with liposuction then performing a standard tummy tuck. The patient is then placed on their side so that resection of skin and fat can be performed on the low flanks/hip and the low back/buttock. One drain is placed in the back and one in the front. The tissue is closed in multiple layers with absorbing stitches. A compression garment is then placed. The patient is discharged with their caregiver if predetermined criteria are met and Dr. Palmer feels they are a candidate for same day surgery, otherwise the patient is kept overnight in the office recovery on a monitor with a registered nurse.
*Lower Body Lift Recovery
All patients are seen back the day after surgery. This helps with early mobilization, which helps reduce post operative complications. If all looks good the day after surgery, the patient is seen in 1 week, then 2 weeks, then 1 month. Because of the extent of the procedure, you should expect to take 3-6 weeks off from work for complete recovery. At 3 months most of the swelling should have resolved and a final outcome can be fully assessed. Side effects include bruising, swelling, and slight numbness in the treatment areas. Infection is very rare, but you will be on antibiotics for a week afterward. Dr. Palmer will give you detailed and personalized post-surgery instructions prior to your procedure.
