In modern cosmetic surgery it has been recognized that volume loss is a major factor in the loss of youthful appearance.
What Is Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body to another. Fat grafting can be used to improve the face, hands, breasts, or buttocks. This safe, effective procedure produces natural-looking results without incisions. At Surgical Arts of Virginia & Ageless Innovations Medical Spa, Dr. Shane Palmer and his team use fat grafting to restore volume in the patients’ desired area.
Benefits of Fat Grafting
- Fat from your own body is used
- Dramatic results
- Fat transfer results are natural, long-lasting, and safe
- Stem cells associated with fat help to rejuvenate overlying skin
- Using your own fat allows for large volume enhancement not practical with other fillers
- Intradermal fat grafting can help get rid of wrinkles and scars
- Easy add on to liposuction procedures
Is Fat Grafting Right for Me?
If you are in generally good health, do not smoke, and have volume loss of the face or hands, then fat grafting may be a good choice.
People choose fat grafting to the breasts if they want enlargement, but do not want implants.
If you want rounding of the hips and/or projection to the buttock then fat grafting is an excellent choice.
It is very important that all nicotine products are given up at least 2 weeks prior to the procedure and for several weeks afterward. If you are diabetic your sugar should be well controlled and less fat “take” should be expected.
How is Fat Grafting Performed?
Dr. Palmer performs fat grafting under IV sedation with local anesthesia.
Dr. Palmer will harvest fat with a special liposuction cannula from a site predetermined with the patient. This fat will be processed and then injected into the area to be re-volumized. For smaller areas like the face and hand, the fat will be centrifuged and platelet rich plasma added before injection. For larger areas like the breast and buttock, the fat is processed with decanting before injection.
The goal of Dr. Palmer and his staff is to help you achieve the most appealing and natural-looking results, while making your surgical experience as easy and comfortable as possible.
Fat Grafting Recovery
After surgery, you will receive instructions regarding your post-surgical care. Most patients take 1-2 weeks off from work to recover. Patients can expect swelling in the treated areas that resolves within a few days to weeks, depending on the area treated. While you will see visible results several weeks following your procedure, your results will continue to improve over the next few months. Results are often everlasting; however, touch up procedures are occasionally necessary.
